Southern Region Two Character Headcodes

Regular price £5.00 Unit price per

7th Edition - 1984

This guide includes details of the headcodes carried by the majority of Southern Region passenger and van trains. These headcodes are exhibited by suitably equipped traction units that is class 33 and 73 locomotives and all SR multiple-units (except tube stock and classes 455 and 488) which are equipped with roller blinds for the purpose.

Since the last edition of this guide was published in 1984 there have been many changes to headcodes. So far as passenger trains are concerned, these have been to take account of timetable alterations, including revised routings. services and stopping patterns. Of more significance was a decision in 1985 that letter headcodes should no longer be used and headcodes no longer shown by freight trains.

The guide is divided into two parts; first is a list of the numerical headcodes, then details of destination blinds used in units of class 455.

Waterloo & City line trains show a single letter on a metal plate front and rear, which Is not illuminated. This is not a headcode, but a means of identifying the diagrams which trains are working. Capital letters 'A' to '0' are used. No headcodes are used on the Isle of Wight.
