Speed - Britain's Fastest Trains

Speed has always enthralled people, be it in cars, boats, aircraft or trains, but in practical terms it is simply a means of getting somewhere faster. Much of the UK's Victorian railway infrastructure doesn't particularly lend itself to speed much above 100mph, particularly in urban areas, but Brunei's Great Western Main Line to Bristol Parkway and a good proportion of the East Coast Main Line certainly do. Elsewhere innovation was needed to raise speeds, with first the Advanced Passenger Train and then the Pendolino bringing tilting trains to the West Coast Main Line, a route rife with curves and speed restrictions. High speed running is most beneficial over long distances, as it can significantly reduce overall journey times, but on short journeys the gains are only the odd minute. Britain's rail passengers have experienced huge leaps forward in technology since the HST was introduced. in 1976, and while the top speed on the national network is still 125mph, getting up to it is now much quicker thanks to the Pendolino and Hitachi's new InterCity Express Trains. Of course there is also HSI, the UK's first truly ultra-high speed line with a top speed of 186mph (300km/h). In 2026 it is due to be joined by Phase 1 of HS2, connecting initially London and Birmingham, and later Phase 2, adding Leeds and Manchester and the ability to continue to Northern England and Scotland on existing tracks. This publication covers most of the UK trains capable of exceeding 100mph and tells the story of high speed in the UK, from the steam pioneers right through to the plans for HS2.
