The Cavan and Leitrim Railway: The Last Decade - An Irish Railway Pictorial

Regular price £14.00 Unit price per

By the time of its closure in March 1959. the Cavan & Leitrim section of CIE had become a place of pilgrimage for railway enthusiasts front far and wide. It was steam worked to the end with a total of ten locomotives on its books in 1959. the oldest of which dated back to 1887. It is to this day one of the most fondly remembered of the Irish narrow gauge lines.

The attraction of the C&L is not hard to see. As well as the normal. if sparse passenger and goods services. it provided a rail outlet for one of the few workable coal deposits in Ireland. The line to Arigna which served the mines was for much of its course a roadside tramway that offered severe curves, sharp gradients and ungated level crossings along its length. It could also be very busy at times with extra trains running to cope with the coal traffic. The C&L saw some of its busiest times in the last ten years of its existence, the survivers of its original locomotive fleet supplemented with engines from lines which had closed as long ago as the 1930s. This photographic history of the CM. in the 1950s recalls the trains. the locomotives and the carriages and wagons which could be seen at work in those halcyon years when it had become a veritable working museum of the Irish 3ft gauge.
