The Chester and Holyhead Railway: Volume 1

Regular price £10.00 Unit price per

The Chester & Holyhead Railway, Britain's vital link with Ireland for over a century, has had surprisingly little attention from the railway historian. This definitive history traces the life of the railway from the background of the early Irish Mail route to the completion of Holyhead new harbour in 1880. The struggle to make Holyhead the major mail packet port, and its subsequent early development, the first railway proposals, construction of the main line and the brilliant achievement of the tubular bridges, the unavailing fight by the railway company during times of financial crisis for the sea mail contract, loco- motives and rolling stock, operating and accidents; all are discussed in depth. There are many glimpses of some of the foremost Victorian promoters and engineers: Admiral Moorsom, Samuel Morton Peto, J. M. Rendel, the two Stephensons and others. Great names, much of whose creative energy went into making the Chester & Holyhead. Based on much hitherto un- published material from official sources, the book is illustrated with 16 pages of plates, some of which are newly-discovered, 12 line illustrations and 5 maps.

Volume 2 covers the history of the branch lines and brings the story of this great railway to the present time.
