The Golden Years of the Metropolitan Railway

Regular price £6.00 Unit price per

The Metropolitan railway is unique in railway history. From its headquarters in London's Baker Street it manufactured its own 'country' through which its trains ran. The country was called 'Metro-land'. Metro-land was the stuff of dreams. It was seen as a wistful paradise of earthly pleasures and content available to everyone - whether they desired the ideal homestead (complete with the inevitable stained glass of the period before the war), long Sundays that offered an opportunity to walk in hayfields and beechwoods, or a steamy railway trip and the sight of long, low, rain-filled skies reaching down to the soft green of the Chiltern Hills

The Golden Years completes the Metro-land trilogy. Unlike Metro Memories and The Romance of Metroland, it follows the story chronologically through the era of the Metropolitan railway's beginnings in 1863 to its end a century later. It offers tantalizing glimpses of railway steam days in the setting of a Middlesex, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire that have long since faded away.
