The Great Western Railway: An Appreciation

Regular price £6.00 Unit price per

The Great Western Railway was not merely one of the oldest and largest transportation concerns in Great Britain, it was an institution, per- haps the greatest single institution in the West of England. In his Appreciation Mr. Nock describes the origins of the Railway, in 1835, and its subsequent development; he sketches in the careers of its great men, takes us behind the scenes, in signal boxes, control offices, engine sheds, and describes the locomotives, carriages and wagons with which the traffic is worked. The colourful picture of a great railway in action is portrayed against the varied, but always beautiful, scenic background of the West, the West Mid- lands and West Wales, but no less so against the vivid industrialism of the Black Country and South Wales from which SO much Great Western traffic was derived.
