1975 Reprint

This notable book has stood the test of time as the definitive work of reference on the locomotives of the L B & SC R through to 1903. It remains the great classic of Brighton locomotive history. Exceptionally scarce and much sought after, Burtt's famous book is now reprinted in its entirety, and with a new introduction by W.O. Skeat, whose career in railways began with a premium apprenticeship under Sir Nigel Gresley and whose works include George Stephenson, The Engineer and His Letters. Probably no other railway has generated such an abundance of genuine, lasting affection as the LB&SCR. Fifty years after its demise as a separate company the admiration accorded to it by its devotees remains phenomenal. The fascination of its engines has continued unabated down the years, and the importance of a book such as Burtt's, with its wealth of detailed and concentrated knowledge of engines, is considerable.

Burtt was a draughtsman at the Brighton Works of the L B&SC R. He was in a specially advantageous position, which gave him access to official records, and he took full and able advantage of his situation. The 7 photographs and 144 excellent line-drawings, the lucid text, and the close relationship between the words and the illustrations have made Burtt's book the authoritative source.

For the enthusiast, the railway modeller, and all those with an interest in Brighton motive power, the re-appearance of Burtt's book is an important event.
