The Motorbus in Central London

Regular price £5.00 Unit price per

Motorbuses have been a familiar part of the London scene for most of this century. Though the vehicles themselves have changed as one type succeeded another, the route system has shown an almost astonishing continuity: many of the route numbers and routes familiar today were equally familiar before World War 1. By selecting some of the busiest centres such as Victoria and Piccadilly, it is possible to trace the evolution of many of these long-standing routes from their earliest association with the famous B type bus to the present day when Routemasters or more recent Leyland Titans are in charge.

While the book presents an historical perspective of the motorbus in Central London, there is also much detail of current practice - for example, those who now travel on routes 9 or 11 will learn that these services have survived for nearly 80 years in changing circumstances and fashions. Kenneth Warren has produced a revealing survey of the routes and vehicles, and his excellent text is accompanied by photo-graphs which recall the early days and record the buses at work today.
