The Railway Age

Regular price £6.00 Unit price per

Was there a Railway Age ? The author says that there was; although many historians have overlooked it, the railway, with its allies the steamship and the electric telegraph, revolutionised social life and politics during the nineteenth century. After a sketch of the origin and growth of railways in Britain, he looks in turn at their impact on society, on the landscape, on the opening-up of the world, and on the conduct of wars; and there are chapters on the men who made and worked them, on the directors and managers, and on their financial and industrial background.

This is an informal essay, designed to throw light on the origins of much that we take for granted today—such diverse things as national conformity of habits (including time), the growth of suburbia, distribution of mails and the Press, and much besides. The book concludes with a look at the prospects for a new railway age.
