Among the working tools for railwaymen published by the Railway Clearing House were maps, the Railway Junction Diagrams (the 1915 edition of which has already been re-printed by David & Charles) and perhaps less known to the outside world, but even more vital to railwaymen, The Handbook of Railway Stations, which included junctions, sidings, collieries and works. The substantial work was published only for private circulation, and railway officials receiving one year's edition would automatically destroy the previous year's, meaning that very few copies have ever found their way on to the secondhand market. Indeed, many railway historians have not yet discovered the existence of this invaluable source of information, and few railway enthusiasts have yet tasted the pleasure of turning the pages and seeing precisely what passenger and freight facilities were available at what stations the length and breadth of an extraordinarily dense railway net-work not only in England, Wales and Scotland, but also in Ireland. This 1904 edition shows the railway network near its peak.
