Working Steam: Stanier Jubilees

Regular price £6.00 Unit price per

First introduced in 1934, William Stanier's 'Jubilee' design of 4-6-0 locomotives represented a considerable advance on previous express passenger locomotives built for the London, Midland & Scottish Railway. Over 190 of the class were built between 1934 and 1936 and they proved hugely successful for long-distance work and over routes on which the heavier 'Royal Scots' were banned. The class provided sterling service into the 1960s, the last 'Jubilees' achieving cult status operating over the Settle & Carlisle line. The name of the class originated when one of the class was painted in a special livery and named Silver Jubilee to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of King George V in 1935; other members of the class were given names redolent of the Empire, imperial triumphs, famous individuals in British history and Royal Navy warships over the ages.

In this latest volume in Ian Allan Publishing's 'Working Steam' series, the well-respected railway photographer Geoff Rixon has drawn together a remarkable collection of colour photographs to portray the varied operations of the 'Jubilees' in the 1950s and 1960s, covering both the original LMS network and the Great Central route on which they were a familiar sight and showing the considerable variety of traffic handled. This pictorial tribute to one of Stanier's most successful and enduring designs will be of interest to railway historians and modellers alike.
