The 'Big Four' railway companies, whose existence ended with Nationalisation in 1948, continue to provide a source of fascination for all who are interested in transport history, or indeed in large scale organisation generally. The London & North Eastern Railway was the second largest of the 'Big Four', and LNER is the first comprehensive study of the railway to be written by someone who is not a railway-man. Looking in from the outside, the author believes that this can help him to be more objective, but admits he may not be unbiased as he has been an LNER enthusiast since 1927! This book describes not only the passenger and freight services of the LNER, and its locomotives, carriages and wagons, but also the behind-the-scenes negotiations leading up to its formation, and the Directors, Managers and Railwaymen who worked so hard and unstintingly on its behalf. LNER also deals with the Company's changing commercial fortunes, and with its civil engineering and signalling, ships and harbours, buses and lorries, and other fascinating aspects of the story of the railway. It gives an insight into its workings and an appraisal of its achievements, and concludes that although there were failures, the LNER's many successes made it a world leader in railway transportation.
