Memories of LNER Steam

The steam locomotive was a remarkable machine and not least among its attributes was longevity. During the period 1950-60 when Raymond Keeley was active with a camera, steam dominated and all the modern LNER classes were still at work, supported by a surprising number of veterans from the pre-Grouping days. These old soldiers never seemed to die and indeed — no doubt due to their robust construction — the fading away was a slow process as well! And their performances were often equal to the more modern types supposed to replace them. Old or new, passenger or freight, the LNER locomotives after Nationalisation were incorporated into British Railways, and, in the 20 years left to them, performed valiantly. Raymond Keeley has selected over 140 unpublished photographs, all of which show the fascinating selection of LNER motive power — from 'Directors' in their last golden summer at Sheffield, to 4-6-2Ts at Manchester. Divided into six 'essays' with photographs complementing each section. Memories of LNER Steam takes a nostalgic look at LNER locomotives from Pacifics to humble goods.
