The Great Northern Railway

Regular price £6.00 Unit price per

Among the old railway companies none had a more exciting career in its early days than the Great Northern. A group of powerful and established companies formed themselves into a confederacy to block its expansion and restrict its trading. How its able and resolute management fought off these dangers, maintained a stout independence, and gradually built up the Great Northern to a position of great importance and influence makes an absorbing story. Its sphere of activity spread across England to Manchester and Liverpool, across Derbyshire to Stafford, and in many ways it became the dominating partner in the East Coast alliance.

Its rolling stock and locomotives were second to none, and for a time its express trains were leading the world for speed. The firm continuity of this historic development that began with Sturrock, continued under Stirling and Ivatt, and with Gresley took such fine traditions into the L.N.E.R. on its formation in 1923, is a cornerpiece of the British steam locomotive story.
