Regular price £7.00 Unit price per

The second stage of the Gresley Pacific saga began in September 1935, with the introduction of the world record breaking 'A4' streamlined class. The astonishing performances of Silver Link were followed by even finer work on the Coronation express in 1937, and then by the establishment of the world record speed with steam by Mallard in 1938. The war years brought a temporary eclipse of these famous engines, following the untimely death of Sir Nigel Gresley; but a remarkable come- back was staged in post-war years, and their eventful career ended in a blaze of glory.

Throughout this book O. S. Nock writes as an eye-witness of all that transpired: as a frequent traveller on the East Coast Route, as a privileged observer from the footplate, and as a personal friend of many of the engineers directly concerned. He therefore writes not only as a long-practised observer, but one to whom the under- lying reasons for changes in policy and in design were confided. Many of the photographs in this book are published for the first time.
