Southern Way Special Issue No. 1: 10201-3 on the Southern (SH)

In 1946 the Southern Railway announced a modernisation plan which included the provision of several hundred main line diesel locomotives. Partly due to the interventional of Nationalisation the eventual production run was delayed and just three engines were delivered, two in 1950/1 and a third in 1954. For the first years of their lives they operated out of Waterloo, modern technology working alongside the older steam engines. How they performed in service together with the behind the scenes manoeuvring that saw Waterloo sometimes in favour of and at other times clearly against the diesel type, has been discussed before. Previous brief attempts at describing their story tend to infer 10201-3 were little more than prototypes for the later BR Modernisation plan. But that is far from the truth. Instead the story that is unravelled was previously shrouded in mystery and on occasions almost as controversial as 'Leader'.It is recounted by the same author Kevin Robertson, as has detailed the account of other notable 'one-offs' - 'Leader' the 'GWR Gas Turbines' and 'Blue Pullman'. Copiously illustrated with material nearly all of which has never been seen before, plans, tables, and a colour section are also included.
