A Nostalgic Look at North East Trams Since 1940s

Regular price £4.00 Unit price per

At the outbreak of the Second World War, the once extensive tramway networks on Tyneside and Wearside had been reduced by closures to the four main urban systems in Newcastle, Gateshead, South Shields and Sunderland. In this book, the third in the series already covering Glasgow and Edinburgh, Chris Irwin looks at the surviving north east tramways during that fascinating 'Indian Summer' of the 1940s and early 1950s, when elderly open-top tramcars to Gosforth Park survived only a few miles from the progressive Sunderland system, with its modern cars running on brand new tracks to serve the post-war housing estates. However, as changing transport policies rendered the traditional British tramway obsolete, closures followed: South Shields lost its system in 1946, Gateshead in 1951, Newcastle in 1949 and Sunderland in 1954. This book is a high-quality evocative reminder of north east trams in their last years of service.
