LMS metals, or joint lines, stretched from the south coast to the far north of Scotland, and from the east coast to Wales and even Ireland. In its first year, 353 million passengers 'travelled LMS, and its freight depots originated 128 million tons of goods. It was an amalgamation of proud and historic companies, each with their own traditions. The London & North Western was renowned as the Premier Line. The Midland styled itself The Best Way. The Lancashire & Yorkshire crossed the industrial heartland of the north. A host of other lesser companies in England and Wales entered the fold, whilst the Caledonian, Glasgow & South Western, and Highland systems were totally different from their sassenach counterparts.

This amazing diversity was reflected in every aspect of the LMS, but whilst motive power and rolling stock began to show the hand of the great men of the LMS, such as Stanier, stations had been built to last for decades or even centuries. Until the slaughter of the Beeching era, and of rationalisation, LMS stations reflected this rich and varied heritage. LMS Stations Volume 2 portrays 67 passenger stations, junctions and other locations, ranging from Hulme End on the lamented Manifold Valley narrow gauge to Manchester Victoria/Exchange, or Glasgow St Enoch. Scale surveys are supplemented by historical perspectives, numerous illustrations and often detailed signalling plans. As well as studying the stations themselves, their position in the inter-company battles of Victorian times is frequently explored, providing many valuable insights.

Hardback with dust jacket, 176 pages. black & white photos, diagrams, maps, track plans, list of stations on rear cover

Condition: Good/Very Good

https://rail-books.co.uk/products/an-historical-survey-of-selected-london-midland-and-scottish-railway-stations-volume-2-9780860933304
