An Historical Survey of Southern Sheds
The Southern Railway had engine sheds located across its operating area - from London and the east coast of Kent, right into Cornwall. This book incorporates every engine shed which was built for the Southern Railway
Each shed is reviewed using accurate line diagrams and black and white photographs - the photographs illustrate the several locomotive classes which were actually based at particular sheds. Also displayed using diagrams and photographic material, is the difference in engine shed appearance, if it has changed considerably from the original design. Track plans are used in the engine shed descriptions.
Two separate alphabetical sections look at sheds closed before railway nationalisation and those which survived into the days of British Railways. An Appendix takes an overview of the key points of several sheds (such as coaling stages, water tanks, turntables and staffing numbers).
A large majority of the original Southern Sheds survive dinto the days of BR, larger ones often taking over the locomotives of smaller sheds which were no longer required, hence the latter section of the engine shed portrayal is considerably smaller. Some original shed locations and in some cases, the structures, still survive to this day, such as at Stewart's Lane and the shed line sidings at Eastleigh (the original works also to be seen).
In general, this book is an essential for the railway historian, enthusiast and even modeller. It is a most enchanting read and will bring back long-gone memories of the great days - the days of steam on the Southern!
