In the predominantly rural areas most bus companies favoured the Bedford chassis, with huge numbers of OB chassis being bodied by a large number of coachbuilders. Then, in 1950 the Luton plant launched its Big Bedford series, with the attractive Duple-bodied SB making a big splash at the Commercial Motor Show. In the twenty years that followed Bedford went on to dominate the British coach market, and it also supplied a fair percentage of the single-deck service buses used in the country. It was also a major exporter of bus chassis, and as a result it became a world leader.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWith Bedford chassis being bodied by firms like Duple, Plaxton, Harrington, Burlingham and Yeates (to name but a few), the range found its way into almost every type of coaching operation. The chances are that, if you ever travelled by coach in the 1950s or '60s, you would have probably gone in a Bedford, for at one time they were supplying up to 50% of all such vehicles used in the United Kingdom.
