Fairburn and Ivan There were 12 classes in all - totalling 999 locomotives built between January 1951, when the first No 70000 Britannia. emerged from the BR workshops at Crewe. and March 1960 - the date that No 92220 Evening Star, the last of the Standards and. incidentally, the last standard gauge steam locomotive to be built in Britain, left Swindon. With a planned lifetime extending into the last quarter of the 20th century. the Standards proved themselves excellent maids-of-all-work at home on passenger or freight workings Unfortunately, premature retirement, as diesel and electric traction replaced steam in the 1960s, meant that most of them never reached even their second decade of use.
