The pictures in this superb collection, taken by author Eric Sawford, record a wide cross-section of the locomotives to be found around the country from the most glamorous express passenger locomotives to the smallest shunting engines. Each of the Western, Southern, London Midland, Eastern, North Eastern and Scottish Regions is delineated carefully, along with the locomotives it played host to. Many of these locomotives were pre-grouping designs introduced by British Railways, but destined to have short working lives as they were replaced by diesel locomotives. Included are such gems as Big Bertha, the giant 0-10-0 banker designed specifically for use on the Lickey Incline, small 0-4-02Ts on Aberdeen docks and the veteran 2-4-0 'Wadebridge' tanks, introduced in 1874, yet still working in Cornwall at this time. On shed, awaiting works, in station and in full steam, this evocative collection of photographs, complemented by the informed introduction and captions, shows British Railways steam in all its final splendour.

Hardback with dust jacket, 160 pages, black & white photographs

Condition: Good/Very Good
