Corris - A Narrow Gauge Portrait (Softback)
A remarkable and fascinating talc, of inc' of the lesser known of the Welsh narrow gauge railways A contemporary of the Talyllyn and the Festiniog, this delightful line, remote in its wooded mountain valley, tragically succumbed before the preservation movement had got up a sufficient 'head of steam'. John Scott-Morgan, an acknowledged authority on light railways and the narrow gauge of Britain, unfolds in entertaining style the long and complex tale of this extinct railway, perhaps the most grievous loss of our many vanished lines Despite the sad mark, made by the slate workings it was designed to serve, and the depredations of a long ago war upon the stands of timber on the valley slopes, the Corris remained for the most part an exquisite line. In this enchanting place a mercurial General Manager fought a long, losing battle against his own Board, the climate, boom and bust economics and the bouncing cheques of his quarry customers. In an unusual and entertaining account, John Scott Morgan draws upon the daily round of life in the Dulas Valley as recorded in the little known Director's Minutes of the Corris, when a lame horse was a calamity to rival a broken firebox stay or floods on the line.
The account welds a series of highly detailed maps, unusual for their clarity and detail, to beautiful photographs and a rattling good text.
