Garraway, Father and Son
Hardback, 158 pages, photo illustrations, line drawings, maps
A fascinating account of the very different professional lives of a father and son who both worked with steam locomotives. The father, Ron, was District Motive Power Superintendent for the LNER at Cambridge and later Immingham. The book contains all sorts of insights into the job of maintaining steam locomotives for all kinds of duties.
The son, Alan, began a conventional career with the LNER and later British Railways, Eastern Region, following very much in Ron's footsteps. Then came involvement as a volunteer on the Talyllyn Railway, the first to be run by a preservation society from 1950. This opened the door to involvement with the rebirth of the Ffestiniog Railway, Alan becoming in due course the General Manager. Thus he was one of the pioneers of the "second railway age", which has seen the restoration of considerable numbers of heritage railways. This account is a unique insight into those early days of preservation from one who was there.
