Gresley's Coaches: Coaches Built for G.N.R, E.C.J.S. and L.N.E.R, 1905-53
Sir Nigel Gresley's locomotives have already established a legendary reputation for themselves; the teak-panelled coaches have always appeared rather conservative by comparison. Nevertheless the many passenger coaches which were built during Gresley's time as chief mechanical engineer to the Great Northern Railway and LNER embodied important design improvements - air conditioning, the use of aluminium, electric cooking, articulation and steel construction.
Michael Harris's book deals with railway coach design and much else. Improvements in production techniques are also covered. So also is the effect of the depression of the 1930s on the LNER which saw all coach-building cease for a period. Of particular interest is the underlying conflict between Great Northern and North Eastern design staffs in the period up to 1923, which has never been dealt with previously in print.
The painstaking attention to varnishing the teak coaches of the East Coast companies is covered in detail. Equally the liveries of the stream-liner sets of 1935-9 are given full treatment. At a similar level, the trends and experiments with interior decor are examined critically.
Gresley's Coaches is fully illustrated and contains full tabular presentation of all coaches built for the GNR, for the ECVS at Doncaster and for the LNER over the period 1905-53.
