The Dublin & Kingstown Railway, the first in Ireland to use steam power, has long waited for its own special history. Now, however, comes this book to tell about the inception of the company, the construction of the line, its locomotives and rolling stock, and the operating methods by which the public was well served and the promoters well rewarded. The author, widely known for his researches into Irish transport history, has produced a most readable volume, with many facts never hitherto published, about travel ways and means in an early time. Although the D&KR was small in mileage, its managers evolved a system of working which drew the envy of many other companies, here abroad. The district concerned, of Dublin City, owes its development in great part to the railway, and this aspect of the subject receives ample notice. Carefully selected illustrations give additional information, and the book must remain a standard account of one of the world's most fascinating railways.
