Isle of Man Railway Album

In this album the authors portray the Isle of Man Railway as they have seen it in the quarter century leading to its centenary in 1973 and the year or so since. So much has happened in that time and although cold economic factors in the last decade have threatened total closure, there has been no lack of enthusiasm by preservationists in attempts to keep the system going, even in much truncated form, which sometimes brought new operating methods and, fleetingly, different types of traffic which added to the interest. The canvas is thus broad and rather than spread the paint thinly over the century, views before 1950 have been excluded. As many of the locomotives, coaches and wagons, and some of the stations and other lineside scenery, have hardly altered over the whole existence of the railway the omission matters little and it has enabled the authors to cover in detail the changing scene of recent times and to illustrate not only the familiar, but also the unfamiliar, with almost all photo-graphs previously unpublished.

Few enthusiasts have had the good fortune to obtain such co-operation and friendship from so many on the railway: management and staff alike, over such a long period. In selecting the illustrations, the authors have benefitted from count-less recollections of the railway, of rakes of `cattles' in Ramsey on mart days, of numerous journeys in guards vans - they always smelt of fresh herrings - and of the races from St John's and Douglas. Such Memories gave the railway the character and atmosphere which they have sought to recapture here. British Light Railway Album series
