It divides into five volumes and this, the first, has been recreated in response to a steady demand since it went out of print in the early 'eighties.

Volume 1 of Liverpool Transport begins with the stage coaches and railway omnibuses of the 1830s and takes the story forward through the era of city horse buses and trams to the electrification of Liverpool's tramways between 1898 and 1901. On the way, the two authors (one a professional transport man, one an industrial archaeologist) examine the various essays in mechanical traction such as steam, compressed-air, cable haulage and accumulators, all of which were tried or demonstrated in Liverpool. The Corporation's strange choice of pagoda-roof German-built electric single-deck trams and railers in 1898 is recorded and discussed, and their withdrawal after barely two years of service is chronicled in full. The book's most valuable feature is the light it sheds on the everyday working and financial worries of a large horse-operated street tramway system; in this respect, it has undoubtedly served as a model for other historical studies of cities in Britain and abroad.

The original text of Liverpool Transport was the result of more than fifteen years' research into original contemporary sources, including Corporation minutes, the surviving papers the horse omnibus and tramway companies, turnpike trust cords, newspapers, technical journals, and the reports of the ty Engineer. No such detailed account of tramway and omnibus working in Victorian England had appeared before this book was originally published and the series still marks a watershed in transport publishing.

Hardback, 21x29cm, 152 pages, black & white photographs

Condition: Good/Very Good
