LMS Engine Sheds volume 7

Regular price £20.00

Volume 7 of LMS Engine Sheds describes the unusual collection of buildings inherited from the Glasgow and South Western Railway. It was by no means a large company, though it ranked third in Scotland behind the Caledonian, its ancient rival and the North British; nor were the districts covered by its lines particularly well known. Galloway and Ayrshire were remote in many respects, much of it a bonny country but scarred in places by industry and ever sensitive to general economic travails. Wild and windy, its winters could at times rival those of the Highland in its mountain country; it all made for a vigorous, independently minded railway, shrewdly run in brisk, businesslike manner. The G&SWR was possessed of a mixed locomotive stock, much of it perfectly suited to the work, combining power and simplicity with an elegant artistry but many engines had been rebuilt in less than satisfactory fashion and many others were ancient beyond their years. Small in number and varied in detail the G&SW locomotives were doomed; the sheds provided for them however were retained, little altered, until the end of steam. Amongst the most elegant to be found in Britain, the singular red sandstone buildings of Andrew Galloway, Engineer from 1875 to 1885 are instantly recognisable. They had a lightness of build that belied the massive stone used in the construction and their opulent, cathedral qualities masked a cunning economy. The high roofs carried off smoke without recourse to expensive complicated troughing commonly found in England, whilst the arrangements of the yards revealed careful purpose. The sheds of this long extinct provincial line show an attention to layout, a methodical processing of engines through the servicing sequence only rediscovered by the LMS (to great trumpeting) half a century later.

The book is divided, like its predecessors, into two principal parts. In the first is an account of those G&SWR (and Joint) sheds still operating at 1947 whilst in the second those falling into disuse before Nationalisaton are noted, in rather less detail. The series has included LMS locomotive allocations for 1945 and this concluding volume (though an Appendix or two might yet be in order) contains those for the Northern Division as a whole, the sheds of Caledonian, Highland and G&SW origin. All, the G&SW sheds open in 1947 have track plans; the book is generously illustrated (with the occasional sally into the singular locomotives, both elegant and lumbering) and some elevations are provided to illustrate the 'great work' of Galloway and his associates.
