LNER Branch Lines 1945 - 1965

LNER Branch Lines 1945 - 1965

Regular price £7.00

LNER Branch Lines, seen here in pictures, were one of the last to convey passengers on some of Britain's lesser known railways. Durham Miners' trains taking visitors to the annual Gala, Gresley three cylinder tank engines working commuter trains, and the Great Eastern 'N7' class, with its articulated coaches packed full with city workers, were all scenes now long gone. Country branch lines threaded their way through the corn fields of Eastern England worked by septuagenarian loco-motives with creaking pre-grouping rolling stock.

The LNER spent what money it had on high speed prestige trains that steamed up and down the East Coast main line recording the fastest timings that could be implemented. Out in the rural parts of East Anglia, Lincolnshire, Yorkshire and Durham little change could be seen. Few visitors penetrated the obscure byways of this vast system.

The LNER was an impoverished concern. but this was to the advantage of the visitors in search of the typical British branch line from the 30s to the post war years and up to the abolition of steam power in the 1960s. Little has been written about the branch lines of Eastern England with their curiously old fashioned engines, coaches and stations, still displaying many of the features of their pre-1923 former owners, and it is hoped that this album will fill the gap.
