Miniature Railway Album: England & Wales - Less than One Foot Gauge
In this, the second volume of "Miniature Railway Album", author Peter green looks at railways with gauges below one foot, from 10 1/4, inches down to the 5 and 3 1/2 inch gauge tracks that are popular with model engineering societies. There are many fine railways that operate on these gauges, including the 10 1/4 inch gauge Audley End Miniature Railway, the Eastleigh Lakeside Steam Railway, the Stapleford Miniature Railway and the Wells and Walsingham Light Railway. Among the most notable of the 7 1/4 inch gauge lines are the Beer Heights Light Railway, the Great Cockcrow Railway and the Moors Valley Railway. We look at all of these railways and many others, but the Eastleigh Lakeside Steam Railway and the Moors Valley Railway receive more extensive coverage because of the photographic opportunities and the variety of motive power available on these two lines.
10 1/4 inch gauge railways became popular early on and, as a consequence, many historic locomotives are still operating today, having moved from railway to railway over the years. The Eastleigh Lakeside Steam Railway, in particular, has a fine collection. Locomotives on the 7 1/4, inch gauge railways are often of more recent construction, although there are, of course, many exceptions. The 7 1/4 inch gauge Moors Valley Railway has an impressive fleet of large narrow gauge style locomotives which the driver can sit in, rather than on. The earliest of these dates back to 1968, but most are more recent.
The locomotives and trains that can be found on these railways are both interesting and varied, depending on whether they are based on standard or narrow gauge prototypes, or do not owe their design to any full size prototype at all. The majority of these railways are transitory, as is easy to see if one looks at some of the old Ian Allan ABCs.
