In the 1830s the successful operation of such as the Stockton & Darlington Railway promised to improve the lot of the inhabitants of Eskdale if a railway could be constructed there too. After several failed attempts at promoting various routes, the rival Stockton & Cleveland Union Railway and the North Yorkshire & Cleveland Railway each fought their corner in Parliament. The latter prevailed, and Royal
Assent was granted on 10 July 1854; the line of railway sanctioned by Parliament ran from a junction with the Leeds Northern Railway at Picton eastwards to Battersby and thence via Eskdale to a junction with the York & North Midland Railway’s Whitby Branch at Grosmont. The promoters of the NY&CR had been supported by the directors of the Leeds Northern and the West Hartlepool Harbour & Railway. In 1854, the Leeds Northern became a constituent of the newly-incorporated North Eastern Railway who continued to support the NY&CR.

The book describes how the NER ran the trains over the line, how the company completed its construction, and indeed how it took over the line entirely on 1 January 1859. Also described are the Ayton and Rosedale Branches which the NER constructed in connection with the NY&CR. The layout and history of each of the stations is detailed along with staffing, signalling and the operation of passenger and freight trains over the NY&CR from its opening to the present day.
