Southern Rails on the Isle of Wight - Volume One: The Central and Freshwater Lines
Southern Rails on the Isle of Wight is an innovative illustrated history of one of the most loved parts of the British Railway system. Over the course of two volumes Southern Rails on the Isle of Wight traces the history of the railways on the Island from their birth right up until the present day. The volumes are lavishly illustrated with over 200 photographs in each, many in colour. They include numerous historical shots, as well as those which bring the story right up to date.
All the original railway companies are covered. Volume One concentrates on those lines which formed the constituent parts of the Isle of Wight Central Railway, and also the former Freshwater, Yarmouth & Newport Company. The history of every station is described in detail along with plans, photographs and ephemera.
Volume Two features the Ventnor and Bembridge Lines, as well as detailed studies of the locomotives and rolling stock which operated on the Island. There are also sections which reflect the present scene, including the electrification of the Ryde to Shanklin Line, and the advent of Island Line. Finally it tells the story of the Isle of Wight Steam Railway and how a group of dedicated enthusiasts have brought a former section of the Isle of Wight Central, including original locomotives and rolling stock, back to life.
