Steam Around Basingstoke and Salisbury
Basingstoke also acts as an interface between the former Southern and Western Regions for inter-regional passenger and freight traffic. Eastleigh is a major railway operating centre. In 1910 the London and South Western Railway opened its Locomotive workshops there, joining those for rolling stock manufacture and maintenance, which had opened earlier in 1890-1891.
The workshops function to the present day for maintenance purposes.
Eastleigh is also a major railway junction between the route from Waterloo to Southampton, Bournemouth and Weymouth and cross-country services from Portsmouth and Brighton to Salisbury and beyond. Rather like Basingstoke, Salisbury acts as an interchange point, not only with the Western Region passenger and freight services via Westbury, but also cross country services from Portsmouth and Brighton, the majority either going onto Exeter and Plymouth or the destinations on the Western region. This book contains in chronological order photographs of Steam hauled services and individual locomotives taken at these locations, supplemented by some others from elsewhere on the LSWR mainlines, from between 1956 and 1965, the majority of which have not previously appeared in print.
