The severe southbound climb to Falahill, eighteen miles from Edinburgh, and the equally ong hard gradients to Whitrope in the Cheviot Hills between Hawick and Newcastleton, were made even more difficult by the continuous, and at times severe, curvature of the line, which precluded any high-speed running. With one exception, the photographs in this volume were taken during the twenty years between 1946 and 966, a period which saw the gradual withdrawal fall the older locomotives, followed by the eventual demise of steam working.
