The Castlederg and Victoria Bridge Tramway

Regular price £10.00 Unit price per

The Castlederg and Victoria Bridge Tramway was one of the smallest of the independent Irish narrow-gauge railway systems, only the Portstewart, Bessbrook and Lucan being smaller. It lay to the west of the Great Northern Railway Company's standard gauge line from Portadown to Londonderry and its existence spanned the short period of 49 years.

The tramway connected the village of Castlederg with the outside world by way of the Great Northern's wayside station at Victoria Bridge but, since there were few commuters and only one manufacturing concern in Castlederg itself, the connection was scarcely a busy one. Periodic cattle fairs and markets in Castlederg generated bursts of business, whilst at other times the traffic was light and easily organised.
