The Encyclopaedia of 21st Century Signal Boxes
A definitive illustrated record of all Network Rail mechanical and heritage signal boxes
The 21st Century Signal Box Encyclopaedia is the first book to provide an illustrated record of all the mechanical and heritage signal boxes surviving on the British railway network in the 21st century. The project started by accident back in 2010 when the then Operations Manager for West Anglia, Steve Ashling, asked if 1 would record his staff at work in the signal boxes between Ely and Norwich. Steve had the idea of producing a small book to give to all the staff when the line was resignalled in 2012. The project was a success and the idea snowballed generating contacts with Network Rail staff all over the United Kingdom. Thanks to the many signallers and managers who allowed me access to their signal boxes, it was possible to photograph the vast majority of surviving heritage and mechanical signal boxes between 2010 and 2019.
The images that record the many boxes that closed between 2000 and 2010 were provided both from my own collection and by friends and fellow photographers, chief amongst whom was David Allen, whose images were invaluable in making the record as comprehensive as possible. Many photographers have committed to giving their reproduction fees to charity and in addition to their fees, the author is donating £500 of his royalties to the Railway Mission who look after many of the employees at work in this book, and £500 to the restoration of Reedham Junction signal box, now on the North Norfolk Railway.
