The Lancashire Union Railway
Also includes the Lancashire Union and Lancashire & Yorkshire joint lines
The Lancashire Union Railway was brought about by the desire of a number of Wigan Coal owners to market their produce more effectively in the towns of East Lancashire. This, in turn, prompted the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway to come up with their own counter proposals and the result was very much a compromise.
Only the section from St. Helens to Ince Moss survives, the remainder having closed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, including the Wigan avoiding line known affectionately as the 'Whelley'. . . What inestimable value could be put on such a route today! Locations featured include:- St. Helens, Garswood, Bryn, Ince Moss, Amberswood, Rose Bridge, Whelley, Boars Head, Standish, Pemberton, Haigh Jct, Red Rock, White Bear,Chorley, Heapey, Brinscall, Withnell, Feniscowles.
