Its fortunes profited from Leyland's troubles with the Titan, and by 1986, when production of the original version ceased, London Transport had more than 1,400 in service. The following year the Metrobus became the capital's most numerous bus type - a distinction it was to retain for more than a decade.

Entering service predominantly in West and North London, the standard Metrobuses were supplemented in 1984 by two examples of the Mk II version, which, it was hoped, would continue the type's popularity. While this was not to be, the Mk II took advantage of the uncertain era of tendering to serve the capital in small numbers with Harrow Buses and Ensignbus.

When privatisation overtook London Buses Ltd at the end of 1994 its Metrobus fleet was divided amongst seven new companies but nevertheless continued as a significant component of London's bus fleet, and it was only with the advent of low-floor double-deckers at the end of the decade that large-scale withdrawals began to take effect. The last Metrobuses in front-line service, at Potters Bar, officially bowed out on 11 September 2004, and the stragglers on school routes followed suit on 13 January 2006, bringing to a close more than a quarter-century of service to the capital.

Illustrated with more than 300 stunning colour photographs, most previously unpublished, The London Metrobus provides an in-depth analysis of the type's service in the capital and as such will prove an invaluable reference work for all those interested in the London bus scene.

Hardback with dust jacket, 192 pages, colour photographs

Condition: Very Good
