The Power of the Deltics (Power Series)
Renowned for their work on the East Coast main line, as successors to the Gresley Pacifies. the Class 55 'Deltics' (English Electric. Type 5) attracted an enormous following from enthusiasts. Although only 22 'Deltics' were ordered in 1958 by BR Eastern Region (following the success of the English Electric Company's private venture Deltic locomotive), they very rapidly became popular with their crews. especially as they all ran at phenomenally high average speeds with high mileages throughout their working lives
Introduced in March 1961, the 'Deltics' were designed to an unusual concept. They had two Napier 18-cylinder engines, originally designed for marine applications, giving an output of 3.300 bhp and allowing for a maximum speed of 100mph. As the 'Deltics' were totally unlike any other BR design, before or since, they proved somewhat expensive to maintain, but apart from their final years they had a very high availability rating. During their lives a number of external modifications were carried out. such as the repositioning of their horns. the blanking off of the centre headcode box and a change from welded type bogies to cast steel ones. The class survived on East Coast main line and latterly Cross-Country passenger duties until January 1982 when the last 'Deltic' was withdrawn alter a series of enthusiast railtours. Six of the production series survive in preservation.
