The Power of the Merchant Navies (Power Series)
Gavin Morrison examines the history and operational career of the 30 members of the 'Merchant Navy' class. Drawing upon his own collection as well as many others who recorded Southern steam between 1941 and 1967, he portrays the construction, development and operational career of the class through some 250 mono photographs. After an introductory essay, he portrays the class, locomotive by locomotive, supplementing the photographs with detailed captions and fact boxes. The Pacific designs produced by Bulleid during his short reign on the Southern Railway are perhaps amongst the most iconic and controversial produced by any British engineer. More than 60 years after the class was first introduced and exactly 40 years since the last were withdrawn from main line service, Power of the Merchant Navies will allow readers to compare and contrast the locomotives in their pre- and post-rebuilding forms. The book will be of interest to all fans of Bulleid's work as well as to railway modellers and those fascinated by the history of steam locomotive design.
