East Kent

This second volume continues the story of passenger tramways in the County of Kent.

In Volume 1, we described those tramways in West Kent, namely Gravesend & Northfleet, Chatham & Rochester, Sheerness and Maid- stone. We now take the story to the eastern part of the County and describe the coastal tramways of Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate (the "Thanet" system), Dover Corporation Tramways and the Hythe & Sandgate horse tramway, together with the various cliff lifts, Herne Bay Pier Tramway and the Ramsgate Tunnel Railway, which completed the local railed passenger transport in these towns.

On the whole, the setting which the East Kent trams ran tended to be more attractive than those described in West Kent, the seaside atmosphere rather than industry prevailing in the towns served, thus giving us a glimpse of how our forefathers took their leisure.

Our story is concluded with an account of what might have been, and sets out what is known about the various proposed tramways in the County which never came to be constructed.
