The Weymouth Harbour Tramway

Regular price £35.00 Unit price per

Countless summer visitors, as well as passengers for the Channel Islands and France. have come to know Weymouth as 'the place where the trains run through the street'. Yet, well known as Weymouth Harbour Tramway is, many details of its history and operation have hitherto remained obscure. This comprehensive study provides the first full account, from early unfulfilled proposals in the 1840s, through the line's horse-drawn beginnings in the 1860s and long years of commercial importance, to the almost complete decline that it has undergone in the past 14 years following the withdraw' of freight traffic in 1972. Today the tramway operates only in the summer months and there is renewed speculation concerning its continuing survival, in view of the impending electrification of the southern main line from Bournemouth to Weymouth.

This detailed history covers the line's origins and construction, together with full information on its later development. including the associated harbour installations, goods and passenger traffic, operating peculiarities, locomotives and 'tramwaymen'. In addition to some 200 illustrations covering the period from 1878 to the present day the author also includes eleven track plans and four appendices.

This study is an attractive and informative addition to the literature covering the Great Western Railway and the Southern Region of British Rail.
