This is a reprint with an introduction and corrigenda by C. R. Clinker of one of the Victorian classics of railway history. It was first published in 1876, and such was its success that the seventh edition (here reproduced) was reached in 1888. It deals in narrative and easily-read form with the history, engineering works, scenery and that intricate administrative machinery which keeps a railway in motion round the clock. It includes seven maps and 210 delightful contemporary engravings, a large proportion of them of railway interest. Although the book would anyway be worth republishing today, its value is undoubtedly enhanced by the fact that no definitive history of the Midland has so far appeared—a surprising fact since at the Grouping in 1923 the Midland was by mileage the third largest railway in Britain, exceeded only by the Great Western and London & North Western.
