Window on the Great Western: An Album of Everyday Scenes from the 1930's and 40's

Regular price £12.00 Unit price per

This truly evocative album reflects the author's twin interests of photography and railways, with a fascinating view of the Great Western's everyday workings. Although a small number of photographs taken on the banks of South Devon are included, Mark Yarwood has spread his net to include other less popular photographic locations such as Taunton, Newbury, and the Birmingham District. Whilst the photographs themselves are of interest in an artistic sense, their greatest value lies in the information they hold. The photographer's care in recording full details at the time of the exposure has enabled further research to successfully identify much of the traffic, and provide an unusual insight into the working of the engines and trains portrayed. Spanning from 1933 to 1948, the album successfully captures the style of the pre-war company and the austerity of the post-war years.
