Totalling 330 locomotives, the 'Hall' and 'Modified Hall' classes were the most numerous of the Great Western Railways various classes of 4-6-0. Based around a prototype convened from a 'Saint' class 4-64) in 1924, the original class, designed by Collett, was built between 1928 and 1943. The 'Modified Hall' design. produced under the I Hawksworth regime. first emerged in 1944. with construction continuing until 1950. The major differences between the two classes were represented by the incorporation in the latter of a larger superheater, one-piece main frames and plate-framed bogies. Officially regarded as Mixed Traffic locomotives. the class was to see service on a great variety of GWR and later BR (WR) services, from top-link expresses to more mundane freight turns. throughout the railway's network.

In Working Steam: Collett and Hawksworth Halls' well-known railway photographer Roy Hobbs assembles a pictorial tribute to one of the more significant locomotive designs to have emerged from Swindon. The 'Halls' were the peat unsung heroes of the GWR and WR . their adaptability ensuring their prominent role right until the demise of steam in the region in the mid 1960s. Railway historians, enthusiasts and modellers alike will enjoy this splendid selection of colour images portraying the class in operation during the 1950s and 1960s.
