World Electric Locomotives

As nations endeavour to reduce their dependence on oil, the concept of the electric railway using power generated by any of a number of methods finds growing favour with transport planners. Supporting the case for electrification is the remarkable potential of the modern electric locomotive, an efficient, sophisticated machine capable of adaptation to most tasks undertaken by today's railways.

In this richly illustrated non-technical study, Ken Harris surveys the world's more important electrified railways in 40 countries to make a representative selection of nearly 140 present- day locomotives. These include significant recent types like Amtrak's Swedish designed AEM7 thyristor units, the German Federal 120 series with three-phase traction motors and the 50kV class 9E machines for South African Railways' Sishen-Saldanha iron-ore line. However, electric railways are not all novelty: investment constraints and increased traffic have ensured the survival of many interesting older classes in countries early to adopt electric traction. This book features more familiar historic designs still active such as the Swiss Federal Ce6/8 II "Crocodile" and the seemingly ageless GG1 of the former Pennsylvania Railroad, as well as less known examples from systems as far flung as those of Canada and Indonesia. Between these two extremes of the electric locomotive scene are the many hard working, often unglamorous types which are the motive power mainstay of the world's electric railways and as such occupy the greater part of this book.

Each class entry includes main data arranged in easy reference modular form, development and service notes and details of principal sub-series and derived designs. The text is supported by 200 carefully chosen photographs, providing a unique pictorial record of the surprising variety of types to be seen worldwide.
