The rationalised railway of today gives little hint of the plethora of lines which once crisscrossed the area serving collieries, steelworks and quarries. It was of course the production of metals and minerals which caused this spider's web of lines to be built during the latter half of the nineteenth century; different railway companies fought for the traffic and as a result gave many of the industries served a choice of routes to send their goods over. The area's industrial prosperity continued well into the twentieth century before the exhaustion of the raw materials started to bring about the closure of pits and quarries. This decline together with increased competition from road transport brought about the demise of most of the lines in the area.

Although the railways of Wrexham have been mentioned in many other railway books it came as some surprise to the compilers to find that there had never been a book specifically about Wrexham's railways. Thus the decision was made to compile this volume. The photographs cover all the lines which served Wrexham and it is hoped that something of the character of the area will emerge as a result. Mention of dates and Acts of Parliament have been kept to the essential minimum as they are easily obtained elsewhere.

Due to the density of the railway network in the area, some limits of coverage have had to be imposed as follows: Chester to Shrewsbury line, Rossett to Chirk; Wrexham to Bidston line, Wrexham to Hawarden Bridge Junction; Brymbo to Mold line, Brymbo to Coed Talon.

The compilers have tried to cover every location of interest but it is inevitable that there are some gaps, due largely to the fact that some industrial locations closed in the late 1800's or early 1900's and some passenger services lasted barely ten years. If readers have any additional information or photographs the compilers would be grateful if they would make contact via the publisher in order that the story can be completed.

Softback, 21x20cm, unpaginated pages, 111 black & white photographs

Condition: Good/Very Good
